Fix your hanging farmgate
by Schalk Burger

There are two things that can cause your farmgate to "hang".

The gate post is not level
The post was not planted well to start with and the weight of the gate has pulled it askew.

Solution
• Remove all wires from the gate post and remove the gate.
• Dig out the post and remove all the cement.
• Dig a new, larger hole in the form of a clock. The bottom part of the hole should be wider than the top section.
• Cement the post into the ground with a good cement mixture. Let it dry for 7 days.
• Fix the wires and the gate to the post again.

Worn or loose bolts and nuts

Solution
Both of the bolts must have two nuts – one on the inside of the post, and one on the outside, so that you can "set" your gate up or down. If your gate is hanging, the top bolt must be tightened.
• Loosen both nuts completely.
• Tighten the outer nut of the top bolt, so that the gate starts lifting until it is level.
• Lock it with the inner nut on the top bolt, and set the two nuts on the bottom bolt the same as the top ones.
