In this edition of SA Horseman, the focus falls on the Warmblood, unquestionably the leading horse breed in the so-called Olympic disciplines.
In a discussion on the development of present day dressage, the late Nuno Oliveira said the following about "German" horses: "The Germans, through their character, their sense of organisation and discipline, do have strong horses with good backs, very correct and large movements and, especially, with an appropriate temperament for dressage competitions."
He added: "This type of horse has almost become in our day, the prototype of the dressage horse."
In virtual contrast to the focus on the Warmblood, we visit a breeder of miniature horses who shares her passion for the (in body only) diminutive ones. Domestication brings with it added stresses to horses, and in the first of a series of articles on behavioural problems, we look at a few typical "stable vices" and how to manage them.
Other articles include a report on African Horsesickness, using herbs to fight laminitis and an old timer's approach to renovating old carriages and wagons.
We hope you will enjoy this edition of SA Horseman!
