Editor's note

Welcome to another edition of SA Horseman. In this issue we direct the spotlight to a few aspects of feeding. Apart from some general guidelines, we also look at some misconceptions regarding the feeding of old-timers and the use of supplements.

In this edition we also look at one of the most recognised classical horsemen of our time, Nuno Oliveira, 20 years after his death. As practitioner of horsemanship as an art form, he represented an approach to horsemanship that was untainted by a drive to win competitions. We celebrate the man and his legacy.

We look at the work of a saddle-maker in KwaZulu-Natal and find out which types of saddles are making inroads in the horse-riding fraternity. We also visit one of the few remaining breeders of Shetland ponies and take a look at the wonderful influence that horses have on the lives of those who have to face life with some serious handicaps.

Be sure to read every word of a very -enlightening and tongue-in-cheek article on the increasing occurrence of so-called "-alternative therapies" for horses and make up your own mind as to whether these therapies are all they are made out to be. We also feature the fifth in our series on so-called "problem" horses.

Enjoy the onset of winter and give your horses the care they deserve during the cold season.
