Editor’s note

Welcome to the March edition of SA Horseman. From now on SA Horseman will only be available at selected selling points, such as tack shops and feed merchants. It may well be possible that it is not available in your area yet. We are continually in the process to increase our list of distribution centres. The safest way to make sure you do receive a copy, is obviously to subscribe.

In this issue we focus on the showring, giving tips on how to present you horse in the best possible way. This goes for preparing the horse as well as the turnout of the rider and handler. We share some secrets on how to make the best possible impression on the judges.
In a special report we take a look at the racing industry in Hong Kong, and what is being done to promote race horse health in that country. In our breeding and selection section, we look at the advantages of frozen stallion semen. AI in horses is, compared to cattle, relatively new, but it is making tremendous progress. We also report on two studs who have major auctions scheduled.
In our health and feeding section we look at the advantages of using a balancer supplement and we provide invaluable tips on foal health.
In our training section, the spotlight falls on creating a supple and responsive horse through bending and flexion. Ultimately this is what we all want: A horse that is confident and strong, but at the same time gives us what we ask, softly and willingly!
