Selected from across the country, 11 top broodmares and 25 yearling and juvenile horses were offered for sale at the first selected Saddle Horse yearling and broodmare auction that took place on 16 November 2007 at Greenhaven farm.
Horses from top quality South Africa lines as well as popular bloodlines overseas, captivated the audience of about 250 people who turned up for the bidding. But it was SJ Cheetah 005, who is about to turn two years of age, that stole the show and fetched the grand price of R85 000. His new owner, Pieter Reyneke from Leeudoringstad, plans to breed with and show him in the future.
The second-highest price paid went to Starbuck War Fling, a 16-year-old broodmare who went for R52 500. The auctioneer and host of the auction, Wim Bester, agreed that the quality of the horses was superb, although the bidding was conservative with the average price being R30 000. He estimated that about 60% of the people present were from the Saddler community.
