Stringhalt (Veterinary)

By moonshine - 2 months ago

Hi! I want to know if there are vets that are experienced in stringhalt surgery. I am not sure if this is a common thing or not but it seems to me like it is a very delicate operation that can go very wrong if not done properly. Obviously I would rather try exercises to improve the leg first but nothing helped this far. Do you have any ideas or advice please? (This was caused by trauma).

Hi Moonshine

Surgery always is a risky procedure, and the outcomes are not always what you are looking for. In published reports, the outcome after surgery in horses which had strighalt as a result of trauma was that only 50% showed improvement. But this all depends on the extend of the trauma.

Best would be to take your horse to a specialist equine surgeon for a full work-up and prognosis, based on which you can make a decision.

Regards

Paul
