Proud flesh wound. (Veterinary)

By Megs09 - 3.5 months ago

hi there,

please can you tell me if there is any way to help proud flesh heal correctly with little scar tissue. my TB cut his right front at the fetlock joint, and it is healing very slowly. he had an injury on the same fetlock whilst still racing, the injury left the joint enlarged and really ugly. his trainer assured me it caused him no problems and since with me has not been lame on that leg. is there any way to get his fetlock normal again as it is so big i cannot get an exercise boot around it. if it is possible i will consider surgery. p.s can horses get fever blisters/ cold sores? please see attached pictures.

This is why i ask if horses can get fever blisters, as both of mine have one or two sores like this on their mouths.

Hi there

Proud flesh is a major problem on the lower limbs of horses, and if one does not take great care with a wound in those areas, you will almost always have proudflesh developing. We usually apply an ointment that contains antiobiotics and corticosteroids; the latter assist in limiting the development of proudflesh.

Once proudflesh has developed, the only way to get rid of it is by removing it surgically. One has to way up the pro's and cons - surgery will lead to a period of recovery with little to no work, and one will have to decide whether you are willing to do this, especially if the proudflesh does not affect movement.

The sores on the lips are probably the result of some sort of injury; with the horse constantly licking the area the wound tends to heal very slowly. Horses do not get fever blisters.

Regards

Paul
