He uses the rope and leg aids to steer. It's an awesome thing to be able to do.

Actually, it is not difficult at all. It is just showmanship.

This picture has been posted previously and caused a heated debate. Although there is a lot of good with the picture, there is also a lot of not so good.

Oh dear, let's not go there again.

LL - i think if some people on the Forum want to go there we should have the right to do so without fear. Surely there is some value in discussing the technical side of communicating with a horse without a bit if there are people who wish to learn to do so?

The fact that there are people who do not wish to learn about it is irrelevant because they need not participate. In the same way that I have abosolutely no desire to compete and so I simply remain out of those discussions.

If the discussion degenrates like the last one it will be, for me, a sure sign that people fear the unknown rather than having any real problem with the concept. If they did not fear it then they would be able to remain civil in the dicussion.

Jane, you have a point. What I would really not like to experience is a repeat of that previous thread. But if we can have a sensible, informative discussion on how to ride with a neckstrap then I'm all for it.

OK I'm probably clueless but what on earth could be bad about riding a horse like that?

wow , amazing how on earth (Horse talk)

By jenny-c - 1 months ago

Chrisco it's not the way of riding that is being criticised it's the person. Certain people on HJ dislike him.

I agree with LL, a debate on the topic would be most welcome.......including objective and polite criticism!

Hi Chris,

The guy in the picture is Patrick Kaye. It is always fun to see how all of HJ land goes to pot when he is mentioned...

Oops I mentioned his name...

When are we going to see you and seun 1 & 2 do that?

Stefan, are you trying to get a girl-fight going?

How about posting some of your amazing pics ;)

Hi Jenny,

No, not trying to start anything, just telling Chris what normally happens.I replied to the post as I know Chris personally and have worked with his horses (Seun 1 & 2), these are the nicknames for his two lovely horses.

As for pictures, lol I don't have any to compare to PK's photo.

Sorry if anyone took my post up the wrong way.

ok, im no professional and neither will i attempt something like that but before i fell pregnant, i used to climb on my gelding, Jazz, bareback (was my first time riding bareback) with just a neck rope type thing and just walk around the paddock and practice my balance and seat aid thingies to get him to turn etc. we were both inexperienced and it helped us learn together. he was only three when i bought him right off the track (he never raced) so is such an awesome horse, so gentle.

Zeva, having the trust in your horse and confidence to jump in a neckstrap is lovely.

However, I think that wether it is a neckstrap, bitless bridle, bit or nothing it all comes down to training. The training method must be compassionate, suit the rider and horse, and result in a trusting partnership between horse and rider.

I know a number of people who will and can ride their horse with a neckstrap or nothing in an enclosed space. But every single one of them has some form of bridle if the horse goes out. Makes you think.
